MultiLink Software: Cable Building

Note: If you want to purchase a cable instead of building your own, click here.

Step 1: Determine the connector your UPS needs Top

Examine the back of your UPS. Does it have a 9 or 25 socket connector? This connector should be a socket connector and look similar to one of the diagrams below. This means you will need to purchase a pin connector.

Note: In the diagrams below, a solid dot denotes a socket hole.

Step 2: Determine the connector your computer needs Top

Check the requirements specific to each operating system below.

Examine the back of your computer. Does it have a 9 or 25 pin connector? Is it a pin or socket? See the figures below to help you. You will need to purchase the opposite type of connector.

Note: In the diagrams below, a solid dot denotes a socket and a circle denotes a pin.

Step 3: Determine the length of the cable you need Top

The cable/wire you buy will be flat "silver" network-connection wire. Is the cable you need 6 feet, 15 feet, or 25 feet? Avoid going over 25 feet.

Step 4: Make a list Top

Write the connectors and cable length you need down on a piece of paper.

Step 5: Purchase the parts Top

Go to your local electronic parts store and purchase the necessary connectors with RJ12 or RJ11 receptacles and the necessary cable. Remember to match the wire with the connectors. For example, if you get RJ11 or RJ12 connectors then you need flat wire with RJ11 or RJ12 connectors.

See below for a graphic image of the parts you may get.

Step 6: Assembly  Top

When you have the items you need you can begin to assemble the cable. Table 1 below defines the proper pin positions.
